5 or Less Minutes You CAN get into Service: Community, Self and Business

Candy Lopez - Friday, January 08, 2010
In the United States we often misunderstand giving-back.  Many people's first reaction and thought is money.  What happens when we don't have money?  Maybe, community service.  What happens if we don't have the time? There are many "what if" questions that could be asked, when thinking about "giving-back".  I had a thought on how to give back in a big way freely and needing less than five minutes a day.  If you use a blog this will be even easier.  Promote one company a day you believe in.  It can be a small business, independent business, on-line, corporation, mom & pop establishments.  When you blog simple say "I like XYZ company they offer XYX here is their information (website and/or other details)".  If you don't blog, once a week send to 10 or more different contacts what top 3 business you like.  This is not meant to take over sites where you give a place stars; it is a way to show gratitude is a simple way. Sometimes it is the smallest businesses that make the biggest differences.

10 Questions to ask yourself BEFORE setting GOALS?

Candy Lopez - Wednesday, January 06, 2010
Setting and implementing a new goal are two different concepts?  Setting is a decision and implementing is an action.  Before taking action it is a good idea to look at the reasons for taking action.  With the New Year resolutions are made and often broken (within the first 6 weeks of the New Year).  Here is a list of questions to help you identify if action is needed and why.  Once you have honestly answered each question, write it down.  When you begin to feel like you are wavering take out your answers and refresh yourself on why the goal is important to you.

1. Why am I doing this?

2. Why will I succeed?

3. What will happen if I chose not to do it?

4. Will this help me in my work, family, partnerships?

5. Will this help me gain business, higher profit, help the community, give me more time, etc?

6. Will this help me stay sane?

7. Is this what I want?

8.How will I feel when I accomplish this goal?

9. What am I willing to do to accomplish this goal?

10. What is stopping me?

Getting to Know Yourself?

Candy Lopez - Tuesday, December 08, 2009
What kind of invention would you like to invent? What would it be?

I would invent a box that could hold a person's feelings of sadness, despair, unworthiness, rage and fear.  The emotions would flow out of the box when the person had the courage and right tools to handle their challenges without feeling they as a being would be destroyed.

National Fire Safety Council founded (1979)

Candy Lopez - Monday, December 07, 2009
The National Fire Safety Council was formed in 1979 to encourage education and the prevention of burns, especially among children.  With ovens cooking, tree-lights kept on, candles, children, pets and Aunt Bertha sleeping with a ciggy hangin out of her mouth;we can't watch it all.  Please take a look around your home and/or office and make it a safety zone.  At home, make sure you have an multiple exit strategies for all people and animals in your home.  If you hear a fire alarm from a neighbors house take the extra minute, to knock on the door, to ask if everything is ok.  Most of the time it will be...but....what if you were needed?  Our lives are super busy that we take short cuts; if you see something that could be dangerous please let someone know.

What bills do I pay?

Candy Lopez - Thursday, November 19, 2009
I received a note today asking my advice about money and bills.  The question was, "I have no money, how do I live?"  After back and forth e-mails this is the low-down on the situation.

One income family (wife/husband/2 young children)
Income person makes a small base and a small commission (no concrete accountability)
No credit card debt, no vehcile debt, huge medical premiums (I can't believe what they are paying)
Bills that accrue penalties if not paid on time

So what is a person to do?

I am no Suzie Orman, financial advisor, or anything that comes close to dealing with other's money.

However, after some thought and tried on their shoes this is what I came up with.

Rent FIRST
Medical SECOND
Food THIRD
Gas FORTH
Heating FIFTH
All Else Comes After the first Five

Here is my reasoning:

Rent need a place to live (hopefully, in a safe place)  (but a dwelling with a roof over it is better than nothing)
Medical - they may be paying a HUGE amount for medical insurance, however, if something happens to one of the 2 kids they are screwed, if something happens to the parents they are screwed.  Medicine is outrageous.  (TIP: If you can't afford the necessary medication call the manufacture and ask them for pro bono product some companies have special programs, you just need to ask)
Food while necessary came in third because there are many avenues to get food: food banks, Dollar Stores, CVC, Walmart all have inexpensive food.  If you qualify the kids can get breakfast and lunch free at school.  There are also free bag lunch programs and state aid if you fall into certain guidelines.
Gas for the car comes in Fourth as you need it to go to work and home.  Try asking for a ride share, see if public transportation is less expensive; sometimes it 's not.  Also, ask if you can work from home a couple of days a week.
Heating Fifth - If you have a roof over your head worse case bundle up...coats, blankets etc, also contact your local energy company and see if they have a payment program, rebates or discount programs

Cable TV, Phone, Personal Products, car insurance, credit cards, clothing can come after the first 5.  I do not advocate breaking the law with the car insurance portion but if it becomes that tight, do what you can to make sure your children are safe first and foremost.  There are many programs that have nothing to do with the government that are set up to help when you need it.  Churches, friends, family, the internet are all sources of information.  The biggest issue I see is PRIDE.  There is nothing wrong in asking for help.  Humble yourself and know times will get better.  When they do, you can help another in need.

I would love to hear what everyone thinks about this topic?

Precious - We All Are

Candy Lopez - Wednesday, November 18, 2009
I read a great quote by a young woman doing big things, she is 26.  Her name is Gabourey Sidibe, you might recognize her as Precious in the new movie Precious.

Quote: "The press paints the picture that I got this role and now I'm awesome.  But the truth is that I've been awesome, and then got this role."

With words and wisdom such as hers I can't wait to see the movie.

Precious: Based on the Novel ``Push'' by Sapphire

Pregnant by her own father for the second time, 16-year-old Claireece ``Precious'' Jones (Gabourey Sidibe) can neither read nor write and suffers constant abuse at the hands of her vicious mother (Mo'Nique). Precious instinctively sees a chance to turn her life around when she is offered the opportunity to transfer to an alternative school. Under the patient, firm guidance of her new teacher, Ms. Rain (Paula Patton), Precious begins the journey from oppression to self-determination.

Mistakes Are Allowed

Candy Lopez - Tuesday, November 17, 2009
Many are troubled when they realize that making mistakes is acceptable and a fact of life.  It seems wierd and unnatural that you would accept anything less than perfect, as you do your best.  However, perfectionism is the fastest way to fail yourself and your life.  It is through our mistakes that we learn, grow and thrive. Mistakes are ultimately what leads us to our successes.  The challenge is, when mistakes are made, we need to ACKNOWLEDGE them. And, know they are only stepping stones in reaching our goals.  If you live in fear of making mistakes you limit both your risks and opportunities that life has to offer.  Free yourself from a perfectionistic mentality, explore your life and turn your mistakes into successes; by being honest and evaluating what caused the bump in the road.

Movie Reviews: Paranormal Activity

Candy Lopez - Wednesday, November 11, 2009
I love horror films; they are my favorite genre of all time.  There was a lot of hype in the trailers and commercials regarding Paranormal Activity.  My kids and husband saw the film before me and it seemed to scare the beegeebees out of them.  I was so excited and made time to fit it into my schedule.  There were about 6 other people in the theater.  With popcorn and a Diet Coke in hand I was ready for a scare-fest.  What I got was the case of "Could I please have my money back!"  Paranormal Activity was AWFUL. There were two scenes that caused me to jump; it wasn't the scene, as much as, it was the bang in the midst of quiet.  Most of the movie takes place while a couple is sleeping.  I can see why, it was a total sleeper of a film.  The film was so bad I would veto even renting it.  My husband said it was scarier the first time; as the theater was packed and the audience feed off the energy in the room.  Personally, I need a film that can stand on its own to scare me.
